CG Roundup Podcast
Big news! I have been invited to be part of the CG podcast cgRoundup. I have been listening to the show since its inception so after I was invited to be part of the team I jumped at the chance. My debut is currently up as Episode 5 which was originally going to be just an audio test with Andrew but we talked for a crazy long time, so a show could easily be devised from such material. This episode covers mostly Houdini so if you’re a Houdini user there are some nice points of discussion you might be interested in. I’m certainly looking forward to more shows!

only 42 minutes in and not under perfect listening circumstances and i’m compelled to comment.
this is gonna be lopsided, but just a quick comment.
response to your comments at about 38 minutes: i’m pretty sure one of the H10 sneak peek vids showed CHOPs curves attached to the params, like a pop-up window docked to the param, no?
and stop mentally preparing yourself for a bleak future, dropping the HD ver! ( have you used MOI? ) because by the time things would change that much, Blender and others would be at a different level. IOW, the 3D app landscape will have changed… DRASTICALLY.
… so will programming tools.
… and then starting w/ Blender source or the recently released into the public domain H source, or from scratch, we will start our own 3D app. bring on the excess noise! ;o)
… also, if we’re gonna drop the $$$$, we’re gonna be beyond doing this as a hobby, yes?

The Wild. totally thought it was a copy of Madagascar. interesting to hear otherwise. really need to check my facts. ( wasn’t it the *only* movie that *only* used Houdini? ) it was a total proof of concept and it apparently didn’t pay off, but if you watch it, didn’t it? the only complaints i heard were the story and that it bombed, so it wasn’t H that sunk it. still it’s not gonna help get ppl to learn something new — to them — when they are comfortable where they are. ( enter conspiracy theories here. )

For the CHOPs thing do you mean Motion FX? I didn’t even think of that. Maybe there is a way to hook that into the ramp parameters. Definitely going to look into that!

yes, Motion FX. i found it ( again ) off of youtube w/ search terms “houdini motion fx” but it’s title is “H10 Countdown – Wiggle Room” ( both w/o quotes )
but per your discussion in this ep regarding ramps, is Motion FX an answer?
if not, and perhaps more …. complicated (?) … than ppl from other apps would like, but there are examples of using a range of 100 frames of a CHOPs curve and resampling it down to [0..1] when fetching the it and then using it for whatever in conjunction w/ $LIFE etc.
would that cut it?
other than that, more more MORE!!!!
